Unlike its counterpart Times Square, New York City which is one of the most iconic and easily recognisable tourist destinations in the world, Times Square in Hong Kong is less well known. While it may not share quite the same global fame as its American namesake, it is nevertheless a strong contender in Hong Kong’s tourism scene and is considered a landmark site in Hong Kong.

Times Square in Hong Kong is made up of a large shopping centre as well as an office tower. It was opened in April 1994 in the heart of the city and thus, is within easy reach of tourists staying in hotels such as the Cosmopolitan Hotel Hong Kong or the Wan Chai Hotel Hong Kong. Tourists who wish to visit the Times Square Shopping Mall can do so via the Causeway Bay Station.

Time Square Shopping Mall was one of a kind when it was built as it was the first high-rise mall in the city, spanning upwards of nine stories. This was a welcome development to the island, as it made more economic use of land area in a city where the limited free space available for occupation was fast running out causing land prices to soar. Today, the mall is home not only to a myriad of stores selling an admirable variety of items and brands, but also a cinema complex outfitted with all the latest technology, various exhibitions, and an array of restaurants boasting a great mix of international cuisine.

Fans of the Tomb Raider franchise may recognise parts of this mall as one of the department stores was featured in the movie Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. In the film, the temporarily closed-down store was used to conceal a biological weapons operation.

The Times Square Shopping Mall is a popular destination in Hong Kong as it has a little something for everyone.
