The Souq style actually has a historic tradition behind it. Back in the day, dhows or sailing ships from the Far East and India would offload their cargo and the goods they would bring would be haggled over in the roadside Souqs nearby. ‘Souq’ is Arabic for Market place and till today this culture prevails with the crowds, noise and life that it all started with.

The current trend in Souqs have gone one step further and today, souqs can be seen divided according to the items on sale. These Arabian Flea markets sell it all; the exquisite to the mundane. Some have luxurious expensive items-even branded stuff- and others have more local less sophisticated goodies that are authentic to the location. The Souq Al Badawi and the Souq Al Qawas located in Al Ain is an excellent start of point. As it is part of the massive Badawi Mall, this is an excellent place for a wholesome yet authentic shopping experience. The architecture itself is something to admire and the 50 different shops that it is made up of boasts an excellent collection of local traditional items, many of which are souvenirs. The Fish Souk at Mina Zayed and Al Mina Fruit and vegetable Souk is an excellent place for ever so fresh produce. Even if you aren’t buying anything, just stroll around because the photo opportunity here is fantastic. Then there are the Carpet Souks that sell an array of exquisite Persian rugs and a couple of modern rugs as well. You can also get Arabian cushion seating called the Majlis here at a very reasonable price. The Souq Al Zafrani is another interesting Souq if you want an authentic feel of the true Emirati Culture. From traditional garments, traditional incense to even traditional coffee you find it all here. Finally there is the Gold Souq. Offering an array of designs in interesting sizes, this is one place you must simply explore.
