Dubai Souks
Explore Traditional Arab Marketplaces
Souks are traditional Arab marketplaces where one can purchase a variety of things including textiles, perfumes, household items etc. The marketplaces are usually a hub of activity, with the streets being crowded with customers haggling with sellers. Countries such as Oman, Morocco and Kuwait are famous for their souks. Although the ones in Dubai are not as fascinating, they are still worth visiting. While one can find a number of souks on either side of the creek they are most concentrated along Deira, although tourists with time to spare should consider visiting the souks on both sides- it only takes about ten minutes to cross the creek. Dubai has several famous souks; these are the Fish Market, the Gold Souk, the Textile Souk and the Spice Souk.
The Fish Market is the best place to get fresh seafood, although the aroma that hovers around the market may prevent the more squeamish from visiting. In addition to coming across a variety of exotic and delicious fish, visitors can also visit the nearby museum that details Dubai’s fishing history. One can also find a few good seafood restaurants located close by. The Gold Souk stands as a stark contrast to the Fish Market. Full of glam and glitter, the Gold Souk contains streets of shops selling gold. The biggest problem that visitors face is deciding where to start. Gold is amazingly cheap here, so are precious stones and pearls.
Tourists with a love of clothes may never want to leave the Textile Souk. One can find fabrics of all colours and textures at unbelievably low prices. Sales occur frequently especially around major holidays and the Dubai Shopping Festival. The Spice Souk, as its name suggests, is dedicated entirely to all types of spices. Selling everything from commonplace spices and more exotic substances, the Spice Souk makes for an interesting diversion.
The souks are the ideal places to shop for bargains. While haggling over prices may seem odd at first, visitors are bound to get into the proper spirit of things quite quickly. Tourists looking for Dubai luxury hotels close to the souks can try the Millennium Plaza Hotel Dubai. It is one of the best 5 star hotels Dubai and is located just twenty minutes from the airport. The hotel is also close to the Dubai Metro Station allowing guests easy access to the entire city.
