Mall of Arabia (Dubai)
Mind Boggling
Dubai is continuously upping the shopping stakes by offering a choice of not only some of the most humungous shopping and lifestyle destinations on the planet but also offering extraordinary experiences for the whole family. The Mall of Arabia, part of a mammoth commercial development project is one such destination.
The Mall of Arabia on completion is expected to cover 10 million square feet. Planned as the largest shopping resort in the world it is set to outshine all other shopping destinations in the Middle East. Its current floor plan is set to house more than 1,000 retail outlets, a five-star rooftop hotel and spa, alfresco dining, a 15-screen cinema and a space for theatrical performances fitted out with the latest in audio and lighting technology. The Restless Planet Dinosaur theme park, an earth science museum and a planetarium in its vicinity is expected to draw crowds.
The mall is being designed in a concentric circle to ensure more footfalls and to move shoppers around much faster and more easily. It is to have its own mono rail system, linked to the Dubai metro and an underground parking facility to hold more than 10,000 vehicles. The whole complex is being touted as a unique lifestyle experience for which there will be no rival. The attractions planned within and outside the mall are expected to attract waves of shoppers in excess of 10,000 per day. The building itself is being planned to grab attention at first sight. The façade with echoes of ancient Egypt will most certainly do that.
Theme parks, shopping complexes and entertainment areas are crucial to Dubai’s tourist industry and its retail and property sectors. The race to introduce new and exciting ventures before the current ones are out of date is always on and most of the time it means bigger and more flamboyant. The main project under which the mall is being development has undergone some planning changes to cater to current market preferences. Construction of the Mall of Arabia is expected to commence in 2014. This is part of the overall project to attract 20 million visitors to Dubai by 2020.
